By far the LONGEST book that I've read so far this year! This hefty tome clocked in at over 900 pages. BUT, I love Murakami and was really looking forward to reading this one.

The book's chapters alternate between the various protagonists. The main 2 characters are Tengo & Aomame, who are both 30 and living in Tokoyo in 1984 (or is it 1Q84???).

I had this 900+ page book for three weeks with very, very little time to read. I couldn't renew it because someone else had a hold; I realized, in spite of everything that was ingrained in me as a child, I might have to keep this book a few days overdue. As a whole, the story was pretty interesting. It was a little drawn out and some parts were just dull. The dialogue was stilted and awkward in a way that would have made George Lucas proud. I made my way through this but only with a relief at having done so; maybe Murakami is not my cup of tea, maybe I just don't "get it". Either way, this was more of a chore than an enjoyment. ...more

Very slow to start, and very strange. but, I loved the ending and I did get caught up in the strange love story. You have to step outside your boundaries of normal to enjoy this book, but I did not find myself too skeptical of this 'Other World'. Well written and a book I am glad I read. ...more

The subtlety of the peculiarity of this story sneaks into your consciousness and leaves you wondering which world you reside in. Well worth the length and necessary for the world built within the 900+ pages.
