So good. I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, because what it's about is what's not said, what's in the cracks of the connected stories. It's about people. About social customs and coincidences and rules and mistakes. It's just so good. At the beginning, I was sure I had read part of it before, and I still think it must have been published in a magazine or something, because I knew it too well. But everything in this book is something you'll know all too well.

What a frustrating experience reading this book turned out to be. It started out with my being cranky with Ms. Egan for his snobby snobbishness when she decided to use the platform given to her by the Pulitzer Prize to insult 'chick lit.' Meh.
When I finally got around to reading the novel, she started to gradually win me over. The format is definitely not for everyone with each chapter having a different protagonist, frequent jumps from the past to the future (more on that later) and a different ...more

Second Read:
I remember enjoying this book when I first read it, over 10 years ago. Recently added The Candy House to my TBR list, but realized it's a sequel novel to this one. Hence the re-read. I still think it's very cool how everything weaves together, and love all the music references. This time I bought the kindle version and listened along with the audio at the same time. Much easier to follow. The theme of time, and how things change with age, was something I picked up more now that I'm o ...more

I'm having a hard time organizing my thoughts on this book. I found it incredibly readable; I loved the way the story was told through a changing POV (many times of seemingly minor characters) and changing date. I actually read it really quickly. But, now that I'm finished, I have no idea what happened, no idea what it was about, other than the passage of time and how it changes you. I can't say there were any characters with whom I connected, or even liked.

I had trouble following along with the story line when I began this novel. Once I caught on, though, I was hooked. Visit brings up some interesting possibilities for the future of humanity and inter-personal communication in the near future while drawing interesting, empathetic, flawed characters who help us look at ourselves a little differently. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Egan is truly talented. Although I found the book to be ultimately depressing, it was fascinating to read each chapter told from a different, yet related character's point of view and to see how Egan completely stayed true to each character through the chapters. It was as if a different author wrote each chapter. I am in awe of her talent.

I struggled through the first half of this book, but by the second half the connections between the people and the stories got clearer and more interesting. I was glad Sasha kept turning back up because she was a favorite. I especially liked the last story/chapter, set in a creepy future ten years from now. One question: who was Lulu's father??
