I picked this up in 2015 but didn't read more than a chapter. I tried it again, almost a decade later ...
... and it took me a month to read! What does that say about my attention span for the written word? (So many of my books are on audio these days!) What does it say about this book? When I did sit down to read this, I really enjoyed it (even if I wished the book had taken a different turn -- beware the sad/bittersweet ending). I adored this book. Hands down one of my favorite reads. Everything needed to tell the story was perfectly built into the narrative. This is what I long for in literary fiction - beautiful character development, pacing perfection, no extra fluff that just adds to the word count but doesn't enhance the experience, and relatable connections between the reader and the characters. The story was heartwarming and heartbreaking in all the ways life is both of those experiences for everyone. I don't oft

A books about books. That is what made me pick up this book to start with. The times I wanted to stop and write down quotes were numerous like:
"no man is an island; every book is a world"
"she adores Humbert Humbert as a character while accepting the fact that she wouldn't really want him for a life partner, a boyfriend, or even a casual acquaintance." (puts into words why I still love a book while hating every character between its pages sometimes)

I listened to the absolutely wonderful audio production with my 11-year-old daughter. We both loved this book and were both in tears at the end. Scott Brick is always a favorite narrator, but he really does a fabulous job with this one. Definitely a good one to listen to.
This is about the bookiest book about books that there is. The story is set in a bookstore, there are book references throughout, and each chapter is introduced with a little note about a book or short story. I got many but not ...more

This short novel, about a surly bookseller who loses his wife and finds a baby in his bookstore, was a cute book that is ultimately about how and what we love is who we are. All the reviews say this is a book for book lovers, but I didn't really love the style of writing.

This was a solid, engaging story with a measured, gentle pace. I enjoyed reading it, sometimes despite the quite schmaltzy language, because of the real gems mixed in. I guess I didn’t feel a lot of depth to the narrative, although I think the author was trying to achieve that. All in all - a nice summer read with some heartstring twanging.
