The Giver came out when I was already in my mid-20s, so I missed it the first time around. I’ve heard a lot about it, and seen it come highly recommended on many lists. I love dystopians, including YA dystopians, so I was really looking forward to reading this one that is beloved by so many.

I've read this several times and have learned to look deeper each time I read it. The first time I read this book it was just as entertainment. Another time I read it as a dystopian. This time I read it for entertainment, but absorbed so many details of how the world worked and that's just wow.

This is your typical utopian book set in the future. I found it to be an easy and quick read. The only thing I didn't like is the characters, who to me were underdeveloped and this made it harder to like them.

I'm a bit weary of all the American fiction that uses some type of weird fantasy/sci-fi to warn us of the dangers of communism. It is definitely the role of writers to take on tyranny and oppression, but books of the Cold War era were so often written in such a thinly-veiled way and with no subtlety (us=good, them=bad). This book is well-written and a decent read, but even though it was written in 1993, it still feels very much like a polemic in support of individualism that does nothing to exam
