The Giver came out when I was already in my mid-20s, so I missed it the first time around. I’ve heard a lot about it, and seen it come highly recommended on many lists. I love dystopians, including YA dystopians, so I was really looking forward to reading this one that is beloved by so many.

Lowry creates a society where no one sees color or has feelings. Families are limited and created by a committee. Religion seems to be non-existent. Rules are the rage and no one really makes any actual choices. Only one man, the Receiver, has memories of the "old" and different world. He is soon to be Old, when he will be released (a euphemism for euthanized), and must pass on (or give) his memories to an heir.

I'm a bit weary of all the American fiction that uses some type of weird fantasy/sci-fi to warn us of the dangers of communism. It is definitely the role of writers to take on tyranny and oppression, but books of the Cold War era were so often written in such a thinly-veiled way and with no subtlety (us=good, them=bad). This book is well-written and a decent read, but even though it was written in 1993, it still feels very much like a polemic in support of individualism that does nothing to exam
