I was nervous picking up this book - would it be terribly sad? Is it tragic? What a lovely surpise instead! This is a marvelous little book and everyone should read it. The story of August Pullman, 10 years old about to start school for the first time ever. He has been home schooled due to the many surgeries he has had for his severe facial deformities. This book made me laugh and it made me cry. Some kids are mean because parents don't help them understand those different from themselves (or teach them that different is wrong). But there are wonderful children and adults that look deeper into a person's soul.
