What Members Thought

Creepy, chilling, and definitely disturbing.

Two little girls are murdered in a small Missouri town and a reporter from Chicago is sent to this little town (her hometown) to investigate and report on those murders. The plot seems like it could be from any mystery thriller writer but the way Gillian Flynn writes turns this general plot into something evil where all the characters are flawed at least and downright evil at the worst; even the children. The novel is short yet I found myself taking breaks from what I thought of as a page turner

This book was on my to read pile for forever! It wasn't until the HBO series based of the book started that I freaked out and wanted to finally read it. I hate watching movies / tv shows before the books and the show looked great so I needed to get it done ASAP.
But just like with Liane Moriarty's book "Big Little Lies", once I read the book, it was too soon to actually watch the show. ha! So all that effort for naught.
The book was ok. Not one of Flynn's best. Disturbing. I would recommend it tho ...more

There are no other authors like Gillian Flynn. Her characters are brutal but believable; they make bad choices, they are hurt and struggle for survival in a hurtful world. Her sharp, spare language suits the subject and doesn’t indulge itself like other thriller authors I have read. You find yourself looking over the narrator’s shoulder and shouting at them to overcome their damaged psyches. I can’t wait for her next book.

I loved this book! Having read all three novels by Flynn, this is right up there with Gone Girl. It's super dark, but incredibly engaging. If you're in a happy place in your life, give it a go. (Those who aren't, you might not make it through to the other side).
