Cormoran Strike is a disabled war veteran and a down on his luck private investigator. While this is not exactly a new premise (most private eyes seem to be hurting for money when we first meet them), it was still a good showing. I liked this character very much, and I enjoyed reading his story for the most part. The only negative thing I have to say about this book is the ridiculous amount of detail in every scene. Cormoran Strike is a disabled veteran who works as a private investigator (well, he would if he actually had any paying clients). At the start of the story, he has lost his home, his girlfriend, and his debts are becoming insurmountable. I tried this one ages ago and hated it. This time I found it much more enjoyable. It still isn't Harry Potter but the characters were well realized and the mystery was sufficiently hard to predict. I listened to the audio, it was read by one of my favorite readers. ...more

I really liked this book. It had a good storyline and plot and some really good characters. I really wanted to be able to give it more than 3 stars because there were moments when I couldn't put it down. But I felt like there was just too much "flowery language." By the time the book was over it just felt like there was a lot of overly descriptive filler that could have been left out without compromising the story.
