I spent about three fourths of this book hating the characters and the writing. It's about a family of privileged, bored, white people. The adults spend all of their time jockeying to be the favorites of the old man who uses his money to control their lives. They fight with each other constantly and sabotage each other. I kept thinking, "If this is how rich people really live, then I'm actually glad to be poor." The kids are all blond and beautiful, bored and boring. I hated them all. Gat, the o ...more

We Were Liars is a Young Adult story dealing with grieving and loss that will keep you guessing as to what is really going on. Cadence Sinclair’s family is very much the fairy tale. Her grandfather, the patriarch of the family, ruled over his financial kingdom and built an empire for his three daughters. He owns three houses for his three daughters and lives on an island as if it was their own private world. They were happy times, but during her 15th summer, Cadence is found on the beach severel ...more

Ehhhh....I know a lot of people who either loved or hated this book and I am sort of stuck in the middle. There were a lot of things that worked for me, and many that didn't. The writing style will either annoy you or be one of those things that draws you in right away. I liked it and thought it did well to add to the dramatic tone. I saw a quote on pinterest the other day that perfectly describes this beautiful novella: 4"THat mpoment when you finish a book, look around, and realize that everyone is just carrying on with their lives... As though you didn't just experience emotional trauma at the hands of a paperback."

The only hint I'm gonna give is this one: if you are the type of person who skips ahead to read the end, don't. And promise you'll read to the end. Catharsis. Devastation. It's worth it.

Surprising and sad

This is a story of melancholy and love and teenage foolishness. The characters are simultaneously broken and lovely and feel very real even as the story takes some fairly far-fetched turns. It's a dark book full of solemn and well-crafted writing.
