My favorite first line in the history of books; one of my favorite novels of all time as well.
This is a really interesting novel. It’s the point on a line in-between Jane Eyre and modern thrillers like Gone Girl. I had no idea how much of the novel was almost a literary remix of Brontë’s work, but the reference and resonances are clear. And I can’t help but think that modern unlikeable heroines have their footing in both Rebecca and the second Mrs. DeWinter.

My brother recommended I read this book for my reading challenge, and I absolutely loved it! I'm sad I didn't read it sooner.

Loved it. I listened to a recording by Alexandra O'Karma and I think it was even more suspenseful that reading it would have been.

I loved this as much now as I did when I read it in high school. The only thing that changed from my first read 30-ish years ago was my impatience with the naïveté of the narrator, which is obviously by design. It was just more omnipresent to me at 47 than it was at 16/17. There is no question why it was dubbed the novel of the century—it is truly unparalleled.
This time I listened to it, and the narrator is incredible and perfect.
