What Members Thought
Unfortunately with the ratings for this book I was expecting it to be much more than it was. And, unfortunately, I have read a few books so similar to this it was far too predictable for me. Now, I am sure the other books I have read are much newer, so if I had read this book sooner I may have given it 5 stars as it probably deserves, but it just didn't stand out for me.
That being said, I still thought it was a very good read and would recommend it. Romance and mystery tied up in a classic novel ...more

This has been an interesting month for me - between reading Wilkie Collins' masterpiece, THE WOMAN IN WHITE and now REBECCA.
Daphne du Maurier takes us inside the life of the second Mrs. de Winter; like Collins' main protaganist, Mariam, the second Mrs. de Winter is a plain woman although she lacks the backbone shown by Marian. From there on out the similarities end.

I first read this many years ago, most likely around my high school years. The mass market paperback with the red cover was still sitting on my bookshelf in Florida last time I visited. I don't remember loving it back then and I definitely didn't love it this time. I made it almost 70 pages then decided watching the movie and reading Wikipedia would be good enough. A timid young girl marries a widower and moves to his Cornish estate. The house and grim servants are filled with memories of the first wife, Rebecca. The terror and doom grow until all is resolved. This title, along with Jane Eyre and Mistress of Mellyn is one of the three greatest gothic romances ever written. They are forever melded into one story in my mind and my dreams.

This book is sinister and romantic all at once, and I could read it a thousand times and never get tired of it. You become so attached to the nameless heroine, you are pulled so deeply into the ghost story and then! just like that, the ending catches up with you, unexpectedly.
