I'm glad I finally read this--I've still got Mary Poppins and Peter Pan to read--along with some other children's classics. Not a fantastic piece of literature--I think a lot of Baum's ideas were amazing but can't give it higher than a 3. I read this to my kids, and they thought it was a bit too silly. I thought it was fine. I got a kick out of the scarecrow’s “bran-new brains”.

Listened to the audiobook version of this in the car with my five-year-old. We'd already read the book at bedtime, so he was familiar with the story and enjoyed hearing it read again. I have fond memories of watching the movie and am looking forward to watching it with my son now that we've finished another reading of the book. I read this as a child, and of course saw the movie many times, but have never been an Oz fanatic. I find L. Frank Baum a bit preachy. Still, it's a classic of American children's literature and kids still ought to read it or have it read to them. ...more
