There were a lot of things I enjoyed about this book, but it was impossible to get past the ridiculously high amount of sexual violence. Every other chapter, someone was getting raped, or nearly getting raped, or being threatened with rape, or recounting in graphic detail how they were raped/nearly raped. For 700 pages. It distracted from what I suspect would otherwise have been quite an enjoyable book.

It usually doesn't take me this long to read a book unless I start to loose interest. In this case I just wanted to make this book last a nice long while. I know there are a lot more books in the series but I just enjoyed slowly making my way through Claire and Jaime's love story as it unfolded.

There are so many interesting elements in this story, but I think what is unique here is the way that the author deals with the impracticalities of time travel in a frank and honest way. It's easy to wri

Claire is a happily married nurse in the 1940's, jaunting about the Scottish highlands when she gets thrust back in time two centuries. Adventure & romance ensue. It sounds kind of dumb, but I ate it up and now I see why this is such a popular series. It's literary escapism at its finest. Kind of smutty, but also kind of intelligent so you don't feel so bad for loving it. ...more

This was a second-time read for me and I'm surprised at how very much I'd forgotten. It was ridiculous. It was just like reading the book for the first time (with the major key points remembered, of course) but I found myself riveted, just as I was the first time that I read the series.

Amazing stories.

Uh-oh, here I go again falling in love with a book that happens to be part of a series. Incredibly long, but it pulls you in so well you can barely notice it's length, you never want this book to end. My only negative comment would probably be that it almost had too much action. Of course the whole premise of the book is time travel, so it is completely unbelievable fromt he begining, but I feel like all the action made it seem even more unreal. I can't wait to get to the next one. ...more

This book really polarizes people! So obviously, I have to see for myself. Badly written romances do occasionally call to me, so maybe I'll like it. I like vampire pr0n, even if it is embarrassing. So time-travel pseudo silliness? Why not?

Update, from 2/3 of the way through: This is total crack. I completely understand why everyone love/hates it. I haven't been able to put it down!

Wow! What a powerful read, you get sucked right in on page one. She writes so descriptively! Sometimes that leads to some very graphic, stomach turning scenes but it's all part of the journey. The thing about Gabaldon, at least with this series, is tha she leaves lusting for more. ...more

This is a fun historical romance in which a nurse is transported through time to the 17th century and has to create a life there. The research is spot on and the few smutty scenes are actually quite witty and light-hearted. It's just a fun ride, nothing more. ...more

Good read.... It was a slog though. Slow readers and big books - don't go so well! :( But I loved it and took it slow. The characters seem well developed, the story interestingand captivating... can't wait to test out another by Gabaldon! ...more

I was looking for a light, entertaining romance and somehow ended up with this, which was very entertaining and an easy read but also well researched and interesting.
