This has been the most surprising book of the year for me. Nothing about this book even hinted at me liking it. Not the concept, not the synopsis, not the movie trailer... nothing. And the possibility of me reading it was made even less likely when I realized my library did not have the audiobook so I would have to actually use one of my coveted audible credits for it. Trust me, I don't just use those willy nilly. So I said thanks but no thanks and moved on with my life. But then this book kept

In addition to this being this month's book club selection, I also used this for the "Read a book that was adapted into a movie, then watch the movie. Debate which is better." category for the 2016 Book Riot Read Harder challenge. I'd actually picked another book/movie pairing but I lucked out with the movie becoming available around the time I read this for my book club. I loved this book so much. The ending paragraph is probably one of the best paragraphs I have ever read. If you can suck it up and get over the technical-speak and the many F-words (the guy is stranded on Mars--I would swear, too), you will be greatly rewarded. I loved so much about this book, but what I loved most is that Watney, the stranded astronaut, remains positive and with a great sense of humor throughout. He gets right to work, and there is no "I'm isolated and starving" monologue. Also

Fast-paced and engaging, love the different voices that bring the story altogether, a perfect tool because like in all good survival fiction the setting needs to be a character too, such great humor and while its full of science it is not too overwhelming for the nonscientist. Note some mild use of language.
