I picked up a copy of Andy Weir's The Martian when it was released because, frankly, I absolutely adore survival stories. I blame my love of them totally on Swiss Family Robinson and The Myserious Island. I also have a major fascination with space (and the ocean) - basically anything that represents places that have been left completely unexplored and have the potential for so much.

I'm not a big fan of science fiction but I loved this book. Gave me heart palpitations because I can think of nothing worse than being stuck alone on Mars, but Mark Watney's log entries were hilarious and had me laughing out loud several times.

Too many Macgyver descriptions, not enough character development. Felt like an extended episode of This Old House. But no question that it's an enjoyable read- I won't lie, I shed a tear at the end. Also I pictured Mark Watney as SUPER HOT, which really helped the book along.

A fascinating survival story about an astronaut left behind (an accident) on Mars. This is definitely SCIENCE fiction, there's a lot of calculations and astronaut-esque strategizing. I was reminded of Commander Chris Hadfield's autobiography and how astronauts are taught to figure out how not to die. They look around them with the thought of "what could kill me next" and try to avoid it. That's this book.

This was one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. It's smart, funny and exhilarating. It can get a little bit technical in some places, but it's fun to try to remember what physics or chemistry one took back in high school. I highly highly recommend, and its being made into a movie!

It's been a long time since I've read a book I enjoyed so much I told everyone who'd listen to read this book. Read. This. Book. Part Truman Show, part Castaway, The Martian is funny, compelling, creative, and captivating. You will love Mark Watney and will have trouble putting the book aside until you know how he fares.

This is more like 2.5 stars. I really wanted to love it, it started out super fun and engaging, but it started to get very, very old about half-way through. I'm just wasn't nerd enough for 350+pages of Macgyver on Mars.
