Read this again in Jan 2012 for book club. Loved it just as much as before.

This is an extremely impressive first book. Even twenty years later, it reads as current and fabulous. I'm partial to fairy tale retellings in general and was quite pleased with this one. McKinley doesn't try to do much here -- just a simple telling of the Beauty and the Beast story from Beauty's perspective. This was my favorite book as a young'un. I read it multiple times then and recently re-stumbled upon it. It's now on my to-read list again, and I'll be interested to see if it holds up to my adult-ish standards!
I remember it being full of lavish detail, painting a world no young girl would ever eschew for the reality of everyday life. I believe I even dropped it in the bathtub once, refusing to put it down.
