The last in my trio of dystopian YA's I read all at once years ago, as they came out (Chemical Garden, Delirium, and Matched).

So. I actually read this book. I just quickly scrolled down through other gr reviews, and a lot of people seem to be reviewing their ANTICIPATION of this book, without having actually read it. It's confusing. I can't weed out the chaff from the actual reviews. I guess that happens when books are this SQUEEEEEE-worthy.

I'll admit it. I'm reading this just for Alex. Yes, I'm secretly 13. (hahah not really - I'm 45.) I absolutely adore him. Julian never did it for me - was that intentional on the author's part? I can't tell.

I don't want to say too much, because a big part of this book is wondering ... what happens next? Will this be conventional? heart-breaking? shocking?

This book was filled with longing and hope and sadness and toe-curling anticipation. I was sad when it was over. I really want more. I realize this is the end of a trilogy, but I think Ms Oliver still has a lot to work with - she could easily write another trilogy of what happens NEXT. So long as that trilogy includes Alex, too.

I'm rating this high, because I want more more more, and if you want more of something, it's a great something, right? But I'm not rating this 5 stars, because I think part of my desire for MORE is a weakness in this book. There's a certain emptiness within it. I needed more in THIS book. More about what is going on. More about how the characters feel. There are so many fascinating characters here, but they are just sketches. Even Lena feels like jut a sketch. I adore Alex, but I still don't see what Alex saw in Lena. I understand, Julian's feelings are sort of puppy-love: I was trapped in a room with this girl and she opened my eyes and so I think I love her. Lena could be anyone and Julian would love her. But what about Alex? I think my problem is, this book gives us a lot of: "we walked from here to here." But not enough of: "we talked about this and I thought about this while I walked." There's some of it, but not enough. ...more

Shelves: 2014

This book became tedious, and so I chose not to finish. Perhaps it was just too long since I read the second book, but I have no interest in the characters or their stories. Time to move on.
