I tried a couple of times as a child to read this and found it too slow; as an adult, it's just right and I found it funny, meaningful and definitely worth my time. A beautifully written, descriptive story about anthropomorphic animals who live along the Thames and have great adventures. Much for the reader to enjoy and learn about animal/human nature.

This is one of my absolute favorite books. My favorite chapter is when Mole is out with the Rat and he begins sniffing and he finds his home again -- sort of a "Christmas-y" chapter because later a group of carolers come and Mole and Rat put together a feast for them.
There is a lot that could be drawn from this classic novel -- the adventurous Rat who shows Rat the whole world that is out there; the foolish and impulsive Toad; the stoic Badger.

I went back and forth between thinking this children's classic was completely weird to rather charming. I ended on the charming side. There was plenty of nonsensical stuff that drove my practical self a little crazy (still trying to figure out how the Toad could fit in a human washerwoman's clothing -- and how everyone could actually be fooled by that disguise??), but in the end I found these four animal characters quite endearing. A beloved classic of children's literature that has been adapted for film and television several times; some chapters have been made into beautiful picture books. But there is so much more to it than the antics of Mr. Toad or even the beauty of the English countryside. The chapter "Dulce Domum" is one of my favorite Christmas stories; "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is almost mystical.
