One of the books listed in "1001 Children's Books" (in 8+) - such an odd book, I stumbled upon this one as a girl, and I just didn't know what to make of it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if someone had prepped me by telling me how "out there" it would be! ...more

I know quite a few people who recall The Phantom Tollbooth as one of their favorite books of all time. I have a feeling I missed the critical window for enjoying it - it's probably best for 8-12 year-olds. (Yes, I am aware that's the target audience; but, often a good children's book can transcend the ages.)

I read this a million years ago as a kid and didn't really get or like it. I found it dense and had the suspicion that I was being insulted, though maybe I couldn't verbalize it. Now I can. This book is pretty easy to get if you're a grown up, and it's kind of insulting and just very self congratulatory in all its jokes. ...more

Milo and his watchdog Tock travel through the lands of Dictionopolis, the Doldrums, the Word Market and the Mountains of Ignorance. I loved this book as a kid. Just seeing the cover makes me want to read it again!
