Wow. That was intense. I need to read the next in the series soon to see how the rest of this goes.

Billed as Hunger Games on Mars, this delivered the politically rebellious energy and gruesome grit that you would expect based on that description. There's a denseness language used in the story that is reminiscent of high fantasy, so I think this book would absolutely appeal to fantasy readers who are not inclined to science fiction. This book is reasonably compared to Hunger Games, but I found it much more mature and complicated than that, and also substantially better explained. For a debut novel, there's a lot to be impressed by in this book -- the characters are distinct, varied, sometimes fallible folks. While the protagonist is an exceptional character in all ways -- lucky, strong, wise beyond his years, clever, etc. -- he's still interesting and engaging to read about.
