What Members Thought

I loved this. The nuance of perception, the subtle characterization, the shift in perspective that was always so smooth and fluid. It was all wonderful. I obsessed over this book and had to force myself to take my time and enjoy every word. Worth it. Add this one to your list if you're looking for a good inter-sectional feminist read.

Audible ran a two books for one credit special but with limited title choices. Because I enjoyed Little Fires Everywhere, I was interested in reading/listening to more of Ng's work, so I chose Everything I Never Told You as one of my titles. I didn't love this one as much in the beginning, but it grew on me. Ng does an excellent job of creating flawed characters whose motivations based on their life experiences make them understandable and forgivable, even if there are tragic consequences.

The narrator for the audiobook was good. Not special, but carried the novel well. Some of the dialogue seemed a bit stilted, but I think that's the fault of the author rather than the reading by the narrator.

I'm really wavering on my rating for this book. I'm going to say that it probably more of a 3.5 star book for me. The story was good. The characters were okay/good. I really had issues with the voice the book was written in. It seemed to be told in a narration, but sometimes felt like it switched to first person and back in the same paragraph.

I'm torn between a 3 & 4 on this book.
It's heavy, well thought out, & has characters with depth. It's written by an MFA student and you can tell. She knows how to write. It's organized & a decent story.
It's missing something though. It kept my attention ok, but I didn't want to always be reading it. It's a sad topic & there's really nothing happy about it. Sad stories usually keep me interested, but this one was just too heavy all around.
Nice piece of writing. Literary fiction, for sure. ...more
