The Sisters Are Alright confronts many of the common racist and sexist stereotypes about black women through a series of personal narratives. Tamara Winfrey Harris begins by outlining some of these stereotypes - angry, oversexed, servile - and then allows black women to tell their own stories, illustrating again and again that these stereotypes not only fail to capture the realities of most black women but also make it difficult and dangerous for black women to express their full personalities.
