Utterly captivating reading about the First World War and its impact on those involved including an Irish nurse and a group of friends from Newfoundland. The character and scene developments are so finely and engagingly written, you feel like you're standing right in the trenches, in the hospital ward, in the town, in the house. I was very moved by the prose- the struggles, the emotional and mental impact, the search for redemption and hope and love. I also learned a lot about WWI, a war I didn't know enough about. Now I do.
