I loved this book. It's really three stories in one which is the history of LA, the history of libraries in general and then how the history of the LA Library and the city itself intertwine. Overall this is a statement over the role libraries play in our lives and how they reflect the cities themselves and also provide a public good. It also gives me a lot of hope for the future of libraries. All book lovers will love this one.

Of course I loved this book...it was about MY library (or at least my old one - the DTLA central library) and how it caught fire in 1986. Part true crime, part history of the library, part exploration of the importance of libraries today...I loved every minute of it! And yes, I checked it out from the library, how could I not read this one AS a library book???

Wonderful read on the history of the Los Angeles Public Library. Orleans centers the story around a huge fire at the Central Library in the 80s, but alternates chapters about the fire & investigation with chapters about the history of the library in general. Very interesting read and I thought the structure worked well.

My favorite book of this year!
