Sometimes you find the right book at the right time. It was the weekend of Kavanaugh being confirmed, and I was feeling rather distraught. I couldn’t focus on anything, and I needed a book to take me to a completely different time and place. Rebecca was sitting on my Kindle, waiting for a moment such as this.
This book is a classic for a reason. It’s the kind of book you curl up with, cup of tea in hand and a blanket across your lap, getting swept up in the story. This starts out as a slow burn; ...more

Read Harder 2018: A classic of genre fiction (mystery)
While it took me around fifty pages to get into the style of writing, what a fantastic final one hundred pages this book has! Even though I was able to predict some of the plot twists (maybe I read this book in high school?), I still thoroughly enjoyed it and stayed up well past my bedtime to finish it.

This is a really interesting novel. It’s the point on a line in-between Jane Eyre and modern thrillers like Gone Girl. I had no idea how much of the novel was almost a literary remix of Brontë’s work, but the reference and resonances are clear. And I can’t help but think that modern unlikeable heroines have their footing in both Rebecca and the second Mrs. DeWinter.

Woooooow. That is the summary of my reaction to this book. So well written, made me feel so many emotions, including incredibly dark at times. And once I got into it around page 30 I was hanging on every word until the very last page. I am very torn on many of the characters, including the protagonist, but I did start to care more and more even about the ones I may have initially disliked. Though some I still loathe. So many twists and even if I was spoiled on one that didn’t impact my enjoyment

2023: still a lifetime favorite! re-read with Novel Pairings and my first time reading from the perspective of an unreliable narrator ... so so good!
2014: I was completely and totally captivated. I know I'd read this at least twice before - once as a teenager and again when I bought the late 1990's edition paperback that still sits on my bookshelf. yet somehow, I'd managed to forget how the story plays out. I doubt I'll forget it again. especially if I can find the movie to watch. Hitchcock, Oli ...more

I loved the atmosphere of this book and the pacing. The last 100 pages were amazing.
