I picked up this book off of my shelf one day when I was feeling particularly guilty about my lack of progress in my classics sub-challenge, despite the eight or so books I was already reading at the time (including a library book currently maxed out on number of rechecks.) Then, once I picked it up, I could hardly put it down -- spending as much of my time as possible snuggled into blankets on the couch or in bed with this book.

I finally picked Rebecca back up after I read somewhere that there was a plot twist I stopped just short of revealing. While I found the second half of the book much more enjoyable, I still can't say I particularly liked the book. I do understand that it was written long ago & literary devices / expectations were not the same, but I just could NOT get over how much I hated the main character. Read Rebecca many years ago, but with its pick for my book club, I re-read it... and was instantly swept in. The writing is hauntingly beautiful and all the characters come alive. What a different world, one I couldn't even comprehend. To be the mistress of a famous mansion, to have tea and sandwiches every afternoon, to receive callers and be expected to give grand balls... to put expectations and protocol above all else.
