This book is brutal, because the story is brutal. It's short - on audio, a bit more than four hours - but it packs a punch. In it, Hurston puts on her ethnographer hat and interviews Cudjo Lewis (born Oluale Kossola), the last known living person to have endured the Middle Passage, the last known living person to be born in West Africa and then enslaved in the US.
