This was a very satisfying YA fantasy with basically exactly my preferred level of worldbuilding--ENOUGH that you get it but not so much that I get annoyed about it. (I know this is a personal thing and some fantasy readers like a LOT more details.) The fantasy based in West African mythology also makes it feel fresh.

So this book was a wild adventure ride! Magic like Harry Potter, a bad-ass feminist protaganist like the Hunger Games and a lot of action thrown in. I love the sibling connection that protagonist has with her brother Zane. I also adored the demure princess throwing caution to the wind with decisions that determine the beginning of this quest. The themes of power and inequality being carried throughout the book also make it a smarter kind of tale.
