This phenomenal graphic memoir was a great start to my 2018 reading year. Author Thi Bui, born in Vietnam and fleeing to the United States as a small child with her family, tells the story of her parents, their life in wartime Vietnam and their subsequent immigration to the United States. Bui examines how events in her parents' pasts have shaped who they are and who she turned out to be, issues she's reflecting on since she is now a parent herself.

I really can’t seem to get into graphic novels, despite my continued attempts. It frustrates me so much, especially when there are great graphic novel memoirs which makes it seem like a perfect fit for me with my art history background. I keep struggling to figure it out-the best I can do is that because the text is short captions, that I just breeze through without engaging as deeply. Even when I know the illustrations are great (as in this book) I just can’t seem to integrate the two.

The Best We Could Do is a memoir in graphic novel format. It tells of the author and her parents' experiences in Vietnam before, during and after the Vietnam War and their experiences as refugees in the US. The story is harrowing and heartbreaking at times but the author definitely ends on a more positive note.
