Structure very similar to the Percy Jackson books, but with Norse mythology. The Norse myths are incorporated in interesting ways and explain enough of the myths that even if you're not familiar with Norse mythology you will know what's going on. While I do appreciate the inclusion of a deaf character, I had issues with the implementation, not the least of which was Magnus describing him as "deaf and dumb" at one point (very insensitive language). If I were more of a fantasy/adventure superfan,

This was a lot of fun! I listened to it on audiobook and it made my drive tolerable. (I listened to it at 1.5 speed to cram it all into a 10-hour roundtrip.) The narrator was good (even at higher speed, which for some reason made him sound more Canadian).
I've only read the first few Percy Jackson books, and the first Kane Chronicles book--I enjoyed them but just never got around to finishing either series? I think I liked this the best of all those... it helps that Norse mythology is just SO WEI ...more

2.5 stars, rounding up
If you've ever read a Rick Riordan book, you know exactly what to expect with this one. The difference, of course, is in the characters and the mythology (Norse this time).
There's lots to like here, especially with the characters and how they represent a range of backgrounds. I also enjoy Riordan's emphasis on asking for and accepting help as well as learning to share your burdens with the people who care about you.

I listened to this on audiobook, which was both a plus and a drawback. It helped me to know how to pronounce all those tricky Norse names, and it did lend some character. But it was also very long... 17 hours! Even at 1.4 speed, I felt like it dragged, and I kept losing interest. There was just a little too much of everything: too much "Bill and Ted" type dialogue, too many travels to too many of the Nine Worlds for just one book, too much blah blah blah. Yes, it's a rollicking adventure that sh

I liked it. Not my favourite of Riordan's stories, but it was still good. The audiobook narrator was awful, though.

I like this, not as much as Percy Jackson or even the Kanes. I do like that in this Demi-God series he really pulls them together.
