I was really excited about this book...I LOVE interesting facts about random things, so I expected this book to be a slam dunk for me, but the facts felt too random and scattered without enough of a storyline and structure, so I found myself struggling thorough it. With a subtitle of "A World History" I would expect information about how salt formed societies (like salt's role in the development of the city of San Jose)...those parts made sense. A ridiculously detailed account of the history of salt. I learned so much and so many random facts while reading this book. Which I enjoyed. The only problems I encountered was that the book often feels redundant while discussing the many salt works, methods of salt production and trading. However, it is very interesting to see what an effect this mineral has had on humans, commerce, and history.

2011 is the Year of the Biography for me, so I'm claiming the biography of salt as my next read because salt is probably more interesting that a lot of people. The introduction is fantastic and I"m hooked. Now on through Chapter 1. Anyone also enjoying this book? ...more

While I found the topic and presentation interesting, at times I found myself wishing the book would just end. It may have been the inclusion of all the recipes, I can't really cite any specific issue. I'm glad I read it, but I'm glad it ended. ...more
