This book - about a long string of murders of Osage people for their super-valuable mineral & oil headrights in the 1920s - fucked me up. In the first three quarters, the prose is pretty workmanlike, but that suits the meticulous, steady reporting of the crimes. The final quarter of the book takes a turn for the literary as Grann details his investigation of even more suspicious deaths & the elaborate White conspiracy that let them go on & on & on, basically decimating two full generations of Os ...more

Narrative non-fiction about the Osage murders and the early days of the FBI in the 1920's and 30's. I know nothing about the murders and little about the FBI's beginnings. Fascinating in a kind of "train wreck/can't look away" way. The "truth" about the murders - and generally the treatment of the native Americans - is simply terrible. so much greed, corruption and evil.

This wasn't the history I learned - and a friend of mine who teaches middle school says it's not the history they teach. What
