What Members Thought

My favorite kind of non-fiction: written like a page-turning novel about a subject I knew nothing about.
Two subjects, actually. The secondary story of this book, how the FBI was formed, was surprising, but only because I’d never thought about it before. There are certain institutions that loom so large in our government that it feels like they’ve always existed, but of course the FBI is a fairly recent creation.

Narrative non-fiction about the Osage murders and the early days of the FBI in the 1920's and 30's. I know nothing about the murders and little about the FBI's beginnings. Fascinating in a kind of "train wreck/can't look away" way. The "truth" about the murders - and generally the treatment of the native Americans - is simply terrible. so much greed, corruption and evil.

It's a heartbreaking tale, told very well by Grann. He does not veer into sensationalism, but just tells the compelling story of the many deaths suffered during this time. Interwoven with this tale is all kinds of interesting information about the growth and development of the FBI and the role th ...more

A terrific account of a(nother) shameful wedge of America's past, with an unexpected twist at the end. It's a must-read for anyone interested in journalism, US history, and detection.
