Man, does it go ON. I think this would have made a phenomenal short story or novella. It's not exactly a long book as it is, but there is so much that feels like filler. The intricate descriptions of the natural world, while obviously intentional devices to contrast with the horror of the unnatural monster, are too frequent and overwrought, imho. If you've never read this classic, you should. Pop culture has changed the concept so dramatically, and while the story definitely has plot flaws, the themes and messages are so timeless and crucially important. Love it!
