Read Harder 2017: All POV are people of color
Read this book. It is heartbreaking and eye opening and it is HONEST about life as a person of color in this country.
Starr Carter is a sixteen year old straddling two worlds: Garden Heights and Williamson. One holds the projects she lived in as a child, the other the private school she attends. Starr tells the story of being two selves in these worlds and we see her speech and demeanor shift as she moves through the narrative.

I read this because I thought I was "supposed" to. And it's true - everyone SHOULD read it because it tells a story about an important topic. But it's also one of those books that is really good - so real that the characters stay with you and the events imprint themselves. Everyone SHOULD read it because it's a really good book.

This book lives up to the hype. I listened to the audible version, and the narration was FANTASTIC. I've been hearing nothing but rave reviews about this one, so I was prepared to be a little disappointed. I am happy to report that I was blown away by this book. It's so well done.
This book is technically in the Young Adult genre, which I generally don't love; this book is an exception. I love knowing that this book is out there, available to YA readers. I hope there are lots of YA book club disc ...more

An elegant, compassionate and totally accessible book about a teenage girl who sees her unarmed friend killed by a police officer. It handles topics such as racism, police brutality, and racial code switching in a nuanced and tactful way. It's also a great read and utterly heartbreaking. Those who don't at least tear up at the end need to check their respective pulses.

So heart-wrenching and excellent. It's a true YA novel without being saccharine and it deals with real problems in a hopeful way. Can't wait to see what Thomas writes next. #ownvoices #weneeddiversebooks

Is this an article from the Riverfront Times about St. Louis circa now? Oh wait no, it's "fiction."
