This was so good!
I don't usually read contemporary YA, because I'm a middle aged mom and YA is not always where it's at for me. This book has been getting so much buzz from my GR friends, I figured I'd check it out, but I usually don't like the hyped books, so I was ... skeptical. And, oh my god, you guys! This book! This book is so good! Ms Thomas has a gift, A GIFT! her dialogue is so spot on it's like I'm right there in the room. This isn't all kittens and rosebuds, this story is heavy. I ...more

I am finally reviewing this book I read in January. For a YA book, this book covers a lot of ground. It deals with a nearly-impossible number of facets of police shootings of young black men, deftly. The story covers Black Lives Matter-style protests, as well as looting in black neighborhoods vs. not-black neighborhoods, the role of teenagers in activism, code-switching, white privilege and tolerance of racism (especially by white "friends"), solidarity across groups of POCs, police officers of

This book made me think about all the people in the US who don't know what it means to fear for your life when you see a police officer. And those people who cannot or will not consider for just one moment what that might feel like. And how that might shape your life and your experience and your choices.

Loved it!
Loved it!

Fantastic. Just beautifully done.
Do not be fooled by the fact that this is classified as YA. It is told from the POV of a 16 year old, yes, but it is real, and it is important, and any young person and grown-up who has ever wondered "what's all this Black Lives Matter stuff anyway" should be reading it. The voice of the narrator, Starr, is pitch perfect, whether she is being snarky and sassy or terrified and heartbroken. I would highly highly recommend this to everyone. ...more

This book is a gut wrenching, honest and excellent read. It sheds light on some shameful aspects of our society. It is frustrating, hopeful, truthful, tragic and infuriating all at the same time. I loved the complexity of the characters and the situations that they encountered.
If you are craving the answer to some of the one-dimensional reads out there and want something that prompts you to re-examine our urban environments and aspects that divide our society, pick up this book.
