What Members Thought

Read this one because of the hype. It delivered. It's an important book that should be added to every YA reading list. The book deals with a lot of sensitive issues but doesn't sugar coat them, which is a good way to start conversations about race.

Uh-MAZE-ing!
Believable protagonist. Hard situation was convincingly frustrating with serious stakes yet a bit hopeful. A wonderfully flawed and loving family. Mostly smooth dialogue, though Starr's dad sometimes talked street and then would change to more formal vernacular within the same thought which jarred me at times (I get code-switching, but this was talking to his daughter within the same conversation).

I spent a lot of time reading this book with an eye out for the sensational or exploitative. In the end, I don't think it's either. Great effort made to tackle a beast of an issue, bonus points because it reads so easily, like an urban Jodie Piccoult book (sorry, sorry). Gets a bit preachy once or twice. Khalil's story, after his death, goes as you'd think it would go (which is not a criticism of the story--it's realistic). The more surprising story is Starr's, and Thomas writes a broad and complicated world for her--parents struggling with whether to stay in a dangerous part of town that they d ...more

This book was incredible. Every part of it was so well written, & from a perspective different than what I've read before. Sometimes background storylines can muddle the plot for me, but each one here added to the well-roundedness of Starr's story. I can't wait to watch the movie & see what comes next from Angie Thomas.
