This is one of those books that I feel at a loss to write an intelligent review of.
Part of it is that I can acknowledge being an outsider here. As such, it's difficult for me to evaluate the story for character, realism, etc., the way that I might evaluate something I'm more familiar with.
I did feel like I learned a lot, and I appreciated that the story explored the nuances of Starr's situation. While the trauma of seeing her childhood friend shot took center stage in the story, she also grapple ...more

Brutal, beautiful, and devastating. Audible named it the best audiobook of 2017 and it was raw and unforgettable.
I spent a lot of time reading this book with an eye out for the sensational or exploitative. In the end, I don't think it's either. Great effort made to tackle a beast of an issue, bonus points because it reads so easily, like an urban Jodie Piccoult book (sorry, sorry). Gets a bit preachy once or twice. And I really wish there had been some effort to flesh the cop out as a person/well rounded character too, but I also completely understand that the goal was to give voice to the underrepresented

Very YA vibe, but I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I would probably only recommend it to older teens + because of all of the profanity.
Contains frequent profanity, some sexual humor, domestic and gang violence.
