If the statement, "You're white, you wouldn't understand," is an excuse for you to get offended, or stop listening, or to say it's reverse-racism, or generally to find a reason to discredit the speaker... well, you're part of the problem. This was one of the most important books I have ever read. And one of the most difficult. The murder of an unarmed child at the hands of a cop is never an acceptable event. Turning around and victim-blaming him, trying to say he was in a gang or was a drug dealer doesn't make it ok. It doesn't negate the fact that a cop shot an unarmed child. It doesn't change the fact that, throughout history, we have been systematically taught that some lives matter more than others.

Hoooolllly crap. This book broke my heart, brought me to tears, knocked the wind out of me, made me angry, riled me up, you name it. So engaging and enraging and thought-provoking and sad and wonderfully written. I don't know what to do with myself right now.

This book is so powerful and so important to understanding our current time. An unarmed 16 year old African American boy is shot by the police and the story explores how that changes the main character, Starr, and her neighborhood. It is also one of the most accessible explanations for why riots happen that I've ever read.
