This is a moving story of family, culture, and what people will do to and for one another. It's a compelling mystery--I meant to just skim this enough to write a booktalk about it (it's one of the assigned summer reading books) but I got sucked in and had to read it myself. The Haitian vudou elements are interesting and add a bit of fantastic mystery--in terms of what maybe literally happens or doesn't happen?

A beautiful, rich story about a girl having to make impossible choices. When Fabiola and her mother travel to the United States from Haiti, her mother is detained and Fabiola, born in America so a citizen, travels on to Detroit without her. Fabiola is heartbroken to leave her mother behind, not knowing what will happen to her or where she will go. One of the best narrators I've heard. Her accents were masterful, moving between Creole, French, Haitian accented English, and various American accents. Each character's voice was so distinct I often forgot only one woman was narrating! ...more
