I picked this up because it came highly recommended from a trusted source. Welp. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I didn’t love it.

Maybe because I expected too much? Science fiction isn’t my jam, but I was promised that people like me still love this book. Hmm. I mean, it was okay. There just wasn’t much in the way of character development, the plot didn’t grab me until about 2/3 of the way through, and then it seemed like it was just priming me to read the next book in the series. I’m not falling for that trick, Mister.

Oh, book. I wish I could give you more stars. I did like your story--alien robots, science, moral philosophy. What's not to like? You were a little slow at first, but about 1/3rd of the way through you became what they call a "page-turner." Your format didn't bother me, and I think you had some really interesting ideas. Linguistics, history, the power of humankind to destroy itself. That kind of thing. However.

I loved this book - the story was so interesting and fun and full of crazy things happening, the characters are great (my favorite is the interview guy who has no name), and the end was like WHOA. Furiously reading the second one as I write this.

Entertaining and imaginative premise, but it lacked the kind of depth I was looking for. I thought World War Z and The Martian were much better overall.

Great idea; terrible execution. This book is definitely not for me. I hated it for the same reason I abandoned The Martian quickly: the smirking narrative voice. Wish I had abandoned this one.

I thought this was an interesting alien story, the storytelling style was unique and mostly worked, although the things the characters were willing to tell their unnamed government official was a stretch. I finished it, so that is something.

I really enjoyed this. Giant robots, shadowy conspiracies, maybe aliens? Looking forward to the rest of the series.
