If I Was Your Girl in Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge

I really like young adult LGBTQ novels and this one is another recommendation from that genre. I first heard about it from Book Coffee Happy, as I have with a lot of my YA picks. I'm glad she recommended it, as it was really good.

Amanda was a sympathetic character and I cared about what she was going through Meredith Russo painted a good picture of what it is like to be a transgender teenager in this day and age. I liked the supporting characters a lot too. (Except for the jerks.) Although it wa ...more

I was hesitant to embark on what appeared to be an "issue" book. I am so glad I dove in, because it felt like a human book, and while the character has a unique perspective, the feelings and relationships all felt very real. I think my favorite think was the nature of the friendships, and the ways in which those relationships were more important, and even more life saving, than the romantic story that seemed to drive much of this novel. I tore through this one and am so glad I read it - a lovely story with a super resilient main character. I especially liked the depictions of Amanda's squad at her new school and how fierce and loyal those young women were for each other. I did have some concerns about the story and Amanda's experience, but the author's note at the end resolved those concerns and provided a lot of additional resources for readers who need them. ...more
