I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars. Totally overdone prose, ending completely fell apart imo.

Meh. Plodding and overworked.
More like 4.5 stars. Gripping!
An interesting story that evokes the aimlessness of parts of the 1960s. What I really liked about this book though is that it explores the loneliness and fear that comes with growth and self discovery. It also explores the role of women in the world and how they value themselves. How often women are encouraged to be pleasing for men.
It took me a while to warm up to this story - in fact, I almost stopped reading it, but kept going as I forgot to get myself another book before bed one night. Once you get through the initial setup about the main character's desperate teenage neediness, it picks up and the story was pretty interesting and disturbing.

4.5 stars. Intense, creepy, spot on exploration of girl experience and emotions. I didn’t know much about this book before I listened to it except that it had gotten some rave reviews and Marlena had been compared to it. I get the comparison but in many ways I think this is a bigger, deeper story. Glad I read it.
