This gets three stars because I appreciate the diversity of the characters and some particularly good sections of writing. Overall, though, I don't think this was the right Oyeyemi book to start with, because it's short stories, and her writing is so fantastical and non-linear that it can get very confusing, and I think having to reorient every time a new story begins makes it harder. interesting but too speculative for me, gave up on this one.
A book as brilliant as it is beautiful. Sumptuous, gorgeous, elegant writing and delicious storytelling. Some of these stories are connected and remind me a little of Margaret Atwood's Stone Mattress in terms of larger ideas and character development, but these are less alienating, way more accessible, contemporary, realistic with still a fairytale-like quality to them.

Didn't quite finish (85%) but I enjoyed most of the stories! I loved the first one so much that I forgot this was a book of short stories and was a little sad when it ended. Many of these stories are weird, but in a good way! I'll have to check it out again from the library so I can read the last couple.
