A few of my all time favorite excerpts are from this book ...
When Mlle Reisz asks Edna why she loves him, when she shouldn't and she says:
"...Because his hair is brown and grows away from his temples; because he opens and shuts his eyes, and his nose is a little out of drawing; because he has two lips and a square chin, and a little finger which he can't straighten from having played baseball too energetically in his youth. Because '"

The Awakening is one of the most gorgeous things I've ever read. It is now among my all time favorites. The story would have been different if set in 2011, but it's not. Edna is a woman of 1899. This is one that I will read again and again. It's lovely.
And now with tongue planted firmly in cheek...the story is wholly unbelieveable! Boy and girl meet on vacation. He's a flirt. She learns to "swim." He moves away to Mexico City. She moves away from her family. She only hears of what he's doing in ...more

This is more a 3 ½ star book for me than a 3 star book, in the sense that I think it is a novel that should be read by people. You can certainly see why the book caused a scandal when it was published – it definitely was ahead of its time. Edna is a heroine/anti-heroine in the vein of Anna Karenina, someone you feel sympathy for at times and at other times you dislike immensely. She can be selfish and malicious and self-centered but can still evoke sympathy. But I guess it just felt like it borr
