This book won both a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award for best novella! The book is set primarily on a space craft headed for Oomza University. Binti is the main character and is from the Himba tribe on Earth. She is a math prodigy and she is the first from her tribe to be accepted to Oomza U. Against her mother's advice Binti leaves her family to board spacecraft that will take her from Earthto Oomza.

This is a great little novella, and I’d love to find the next books. I like the concept; it’s perfectly focused for a novella and gives you just enough of a world and a story without getting bogged down with either. The parallels to the real world are not subtle, but they’re still nuanced and not cliche or sloppy.

This one is tough to review for me. Both because it's a novella and because it's YA. So while at times the narrative felt ... trite? And some conflict seemed too easily resolved, I also acknowledge that the format and the audience sort of necessitate that. So if I look past those issues, Binti had all the aspects that I love about science fiction. It explores race and colonialism and coming of age. I'll definitely read the rest of the series, but have a feeling I'm going to wish it was packaged
