This story is like a giant boulder (maybe one of those glacial erratics): it gets rolling slowly, and ominously, and it gradually picks up more and more speed until I was completely unable to set it down. (I'll be honest and say it wasn't really a five star read until the ending. What a powerful ending. I'm really glad I don't have to wait for the next book to be published - props to me for waiting for the full series to be finished!)

There's a lot of mineral content here so I thought the boulder

4.5 stars, really. EVEN THOUGH it left me with more questions than answers, and is going to force me to read the rest of the series, which is something I HATE (I need my books to be able to stand alone, even if they are part of a series!). But I really need to understand/see through so many things. Nice work, Jemisin.

Another genre expanding book for me recommends by a friend. Was somewhat tough to get into but a good page turner once in. Great cliffhanger to set up the next book.

Gripping plot, striking imagery, excellent character development. Low 4 because a key plot point at the end echoes another, famous book. Read mostly at home on the iPad, over a weekend

Truthfully, I waited until I'd read the whole series to write this review because while The Fifth Season is gorgeous on it's own, you really do need to read the full trilogy to appreciate each book. The world-building Jemisin does is just astounding. And though there are what feels like a million characters going in a million different directions, the way they weave together yet have such distinct voices keeps you from getting too turned around. Highly HIGHLY recommend this. ...more

Really, really compelling read. Absolutely extraordinary world building, characterization, and a slow build of a plot. You bet I'll be continuing with the series. I read the audiobook and found the narration very good as well. ...more
