Read Harder 2018: Comic Illustrated by a Person of Color

I wanted this to be a 3 star read, but alas no. Intellectually I appreciate the fusion of eastern and western comics, and I am intrigued by the world-building in a completely matriarchal society. It was nice to have men be the sideline characters for a change. But, this had too much horror and violence (especially against children) in it for my tastes, and I actually did have nightmares after finishing it last night.

Wow. First of all, Takeda's art is breathtakingly gorgeous. And then Liu's writing gives it incredible life. This is one of the most inventive series I've read in any form.

And there are cats. Talking, multi tailed cats.

Really beautiful art throughout. This is an epic fantasy with a very complex and deeply imagined world. There was a little too much exposition throughout, but I liked the themes of who is truly a monster and who is not.

Gorgeous illustrations, but the story is gory and a bit too complex for me to really get into.
