I read this with Eleanor and thought she should be the one, at 13, to rate this book. She liked that it was about things she had never read before - mainly the topic of menstruation. She said she could imagine being friends with Margaret. I liked how Blume wrote about this age, puberty, and then also had the added layer of Margaret exploring her feelings on religion and the fact she was being raised with no religion, but her parents were. I somehow never read this book as a kid, even though it is one of the quintessential children's/early YA books in the US. And so as I was yet again feeling very jetlagged at 3:00 am and unable to sleep, I reached for the iPad, which can be considerately read in a dark room where someone else is actually successfully sleeping. I read this as a teen simply because it was controversial. I really didn't enjoy the story. Couldn't relate.
