I am reading interlinked short story collections (short story cycles) as part of my sabbatical research.
I read this book a billion years ago in undergrad, and I didn't remember much about the individual vignettes so much as how they made me feel. I remembered Mango Street, sadness, and wanting. I read The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, which is technically a novel, but read a like a series of microstories about a girl named Esperanza who grows up in the titular house in Chicago's Latino section. I never read this for school, but always heard how incredible it was, so I got the audiobook where Sandra Cisneros reads it herself. Not only is it as beautiful as people say it is, bit Cisneros is a magnificent reader. To some, saying that the author is great at reading her own work sounds obvious, but many authors are just not good at it. Cisneros is amazing, and brings her book to life in a way only her voice can.
